Complete List of Queen Singles (UK and US)
Complete list of Queen singles
There was a time when people took singles and their chart positions very seriously indeed. Watching the vicissitudes of your favourite songs, singers, and bands in the charts was like supporting your favourite football team. You would cheer your side all the way up the chart, booing all those who had the temerity to stand in the way. I still haven't forgiven David Essex for keeping Queen's 'Killer Queen' of the #1 spot in 1974. I blame my mother, who bought Essex's song the same time I nagged her to buy 'Killer Queen.'
I remember Queen as consistent chart performers, occasionally outstanding, but usually hovering either side of the #10 slot. The lead singles from the albums were usually big hits. I was imbued with a sense of grievance as a result of seeing how often a great Queen track stalled at #2 in the charts, and still harbour a grudge against ABBA for seemingly always standing in the way (once, for certain, which is enough for a grudge), and for the ease with which they would hit the top of the charts with material substantially inferior to that of Queen. Where, I ask, is the ABBA single which contains a bell solo like Bicycle Race? Nowhere, that's where. But it is best to leave all those petty rivalries, jealousies, and animosities behind to just deliver the facts. We are all free to choose our favourites, and have a right to be wrong if we choose.
The list below doesn't aim at being comprehensive but sticks to the Queen 7" single releases in the UK and the US. This is pure nationalistic bias on my part, but an understandable one. Queen were and are a British band and I am British; my eyes were always on the UK charts, with US performance sought for extra validation and confirmation. Queen, of course, were a global band and scored many impressive chart hits in South America, Japan, Europe, and elsewhere. I feel several more lists in preparation.
I won't add a commentary to the list, for the reason that the quality of Queen singles was consistently high, with any controversies and debates to be had centring on personal taste. I love 'Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy' and 'Spread Your Wings' and 'Backchat' and think they should have been #1 smashes. But it follows that lead singles from an album chart higher than later singles. I present an extensive commentary on the 'News' page, making my views on each track clear.
